Silence is the original ocean
of knowledge. It’s the beginning of question and
answer, the source and root of mastery. All practices
begin here. All power is the power of silence.
The practice and mastery of
tarot also arise from the power of silence. When a
student of tarot strives for mastery, he is like a
fish looking for water, because the power of silence
is as pervasive and invisible as the ocean. How would
a fish feel when it discovered the ocean?
This year’s pre-conference
class will introduce you to the ocean of silence and
its power to transform your study and practice into
the mastery you always possessed.
Silence is not the absence of
sound, and mastery is not an abundance of skills. In
this class, you will learn to infuse the skills you
already have with four of the powers of silence. These
are:
The power to listen sifts the
essence from what is said, what is not said and what
is left unsaid, by anyone or anything that wishes to
communicate with you.
The power to wait presents
the essence of a communication to that in you which
knows, and waits for an appropriate response.
The power to hear understands
the response that arises from deep inside you.
The power to remember grasps
what you hear perfectly, and communicates it in the
proper way — with a touch, a word, an act or a
gesture.
All the powers of silence,
including these four, belong to every living thing.
Everything that is, lives. Any existent thing can
initiate a communication with any other thing. Any
thing is capable of a true response. You can listen to
a rock, or to the wind, to the ticking of a clock, or
to a tarot card, if these things wish to speak to you.
You can wait for a true response from within. You can
hear that response and understand what you hear. You
can remember what your inner voice has told you and
communicate it in a way that even a rock or the wind,
even a person, can understand.
These powers are active and
intense. You will discover each of them in turn, apply
them in readings, and watch the power of silence begin
to open in you like a flower.
